Eleas Cozanitis Obituary

Eleas A. Cozanitis, formerly of Kennett Square Eleas A. "Lee" Cozanitis, 75, of Exton, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania following heart valve replacement surgery. Funeral services were held at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church in Broomall, on Friday, April 12, with interment immediately thereafter at Union Hill Cemetery in Kennett Square. He was buried next to his father and mother. Lee was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Kennett Square. His father, Alexander D. Cozanitis, was the owner/operator of the Kennett Kandy Kitchen from 1923 until his death in 1962. Thereafter, Lee's mother, Elizabeth A. Cozanitis, continued to operate the Kandy Kitchen until 1970. Lee attended the Kennett Consolidated School. In 1955 he entered The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., and graduated with a BA on June 6, 1959. Lee had a distinguished 27-year career in the U.S. Army. He served in many stateside locations and also served overseas in Vietnam (twice) and Korea. He retired from the Army as a Colonel in 1987. He then joined the defense industry as a contractor, and, in 1991, he was hired by the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). While with SAIC, Lee worked several years in McLean, Va. In 1997 he was transferred to Honolulu, Hawaii, and worked there for five years; he then worked for one year in Athens, Greece; and then he returned to Honolulu for another four years before retiring in 2008. After his retirement, Lee joined the Eleftheria Post 6633, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and worked on a committee which is putting together the Post's history book (now near completion). He also served as the Post's Scholarship Chairman for several years. Lee's favorite pastime was baseball and he was a life-long Baltimore Orioles fan and season ticket holder. Lee is survived by his wife and best friend, Rosalind, and his daughter, Elizabeth of Beaufort, S.C. He is also survived by three sisters, Helen Shaiko, of Ardmore, Despina Zerdes, of Drexel Hill, and Maria Bosworth, of Cary, N.C.; one brother, Demetrios A., of Athens, Greece; and many loving nephews and nieces.
